Let’s start out with just the song, ignoring the video for the time being. The basic concept, is Judas girlfriend, lover, wife, or whatever, (Gaga) still loves him after he betrays Jesus. This is entirely possible. Today, many people leave the church because their spouse or significant other do. If the songwriter was trying to create a Christian impact, they would probably of tied it all up the end with something or other about this not being the one straight path.

The song also discusses some topics, such as Judas and Gaga being unforgivable, which is entirely wrong – JESUS WANTS TO FORGIVE US ALL, AND WE ALL NEED FORGIVENESS, EVEN THOUGH NONE OF US DESERVE IT.

The song’s chorus starts with “I’m just a Holy fool, oh baby he’s so cruel, but I’m still in love with Judas, baby.” Excuse me? Can you say that again, Gaga? (And I’m not just asking you to repeat it because it’s the catchiest part of the song, I’m asking you to repeat it because IT’S ENTIRELY WRONG.) It’s backwards! Jesus is not cruel. He came to Earth to die for us. He is the OPPOSITE of cruel, he’s self-sacrificing. It is possible, the song isn’t clear, that this line “he’s so cruel,” refers to Judas. In which case, the line not only has awful grammar, but is also wrong. Judas was not cruel, but at the time of the betrayal he was self-serving. (The opposite of Jesus!)

Now, what about that “main topic,” is it okay to still love Judas, even though he betrayed the Lord? In the song, Gaga claims to be a follower of Christ. (“Jesus is my virtue…”) Everything we are unwilling to give up is an idol, and idolatry is the root of all sin. However, we should still love him – JUST NOT IN THAT WAY. Judas is a creation of the Lord, and because of that, we should love him.

However, should we/she engage in a romantic relationship with him? Judas, still a follower of Christ, went through quite a hard time after the Death of the Lord. (He killed himself, if you’ve forgotten.) Maybe he needed fellowship in Christ during that hard time. Maybe that would have stopped him from taking his own life? But regardless, the focus of the relationship of Gaga and Judas should be on Christ. (Because based on Lady Gaga’s other music, I am not led to believe she’s referring to the kind of love the Bible describes in 1 Corinthians 13.)

Musically, the song is stupid. It is comprised of several parts (Verse, chorus, bridge) that really don’t even fit together at all. They’re thrown together. Songwriters should never do something like that because it takes you out of the immersive experience of listening. As a filmmaker, I could appreciate some of the cinematic elements of the video, but I was not pleased.

The sexual and feminized versions of the Passion of our Lord presented in the video are absolutely disgusting. Such as Christ’s crown of thorns being a dainty tiara held in place by dreadlocks or braids, or Christ sitting in a hottub with Gaga, being licked, enrage me, because I know that the suffering that the Lord went through was extreme, and should never be undermined, because that was His gift to us. The crown of thorns was not a hat of leaves. It was a wreath of nails. Those dug inches into Christ’s brain.

Some of the other images with the song are quite distasteful, such as the single’s album art, a cross with a heart in it. That “heart,” does not belong on the cross until you’re ready to nail it there and sacrifice it – kill it.

If I were a parent, this is certainly not the song I would want my child singing along to, and knowing all the words of. Children do not think about deep meanings of songs, generally. If a child hears this song now, they’ll accept it without question – because they don’t know what it is about. As they grow older, that song might stay on their iPod for a few years. They might hear it again when they’re eighteen, thinking about ending an unhealthy relationship, and just might not, because Gaga didn’t do it. They might not end an unholy relationship because of this either. Outside of the scope of relationships too – they might not kick a bad habit that might be their “Judas.”

Recently, I’ve been doing quite a bit of thinking about where I’m called to serve Christ, and although I often say how clear I am of His Will, I’ve been questioning lately. I’ve been hearing other whispers, and not known where they came from; God, Doug, or Satan? But every time I hear a song like this, or I see a boy wear a skirt on the Disney Channel, or I hear Elle say “Oh my god!” in Legally Blonde, I feel the burden of the moral decline that comes from media. I feel that burden, and I feel the call to make my own little dent in that moral decline. Bring it up a bit. Right now, I’m more clear then ever in what God calls me to. (I don’t know if I can make a music video as weird as some of Gaga’s stuff, and I don’t know if Gaga has God with her; but I know that I do, so whatever I do will turn out exactly the way it is supposed to.)

Really. I tweet about things before their official announcement, I tell close friends secret plans before I’m ready to set them into action… I just have some desire… whenever I have a secret of my own, I hate keeping it secret. (I can keep other people’s secrets just fine, though.)

The best secret I’ve ever kept was my (almost famous) decision to get a haircut, I didn’t tell anyone. (And it made everyone’s reactions that much funnier.) But even still then, my mother knew, and the woman that was cutting my hair knew.

Whenever I have a secret, I need to let someone else know. And now I have a secret, and based on my stats, no one actually reads this blog (lol) so I’ll tell YOU.

There’s a girl. And despite my recent history with girls, which you don’t need to know about, and despite the fact that I said I’d “stay away from dating” for a while, and despite the fact that I didn’t finish the last glass of orange juice I poured… there’s a girl. I know her through Church, and I feel God telling me that this is alright (But the last girl that I met at Church… that was bad… but now it’s actually kind of funny.)

I’m  mayor of my Parish on Foursquare.

I’ve been on Foursquare lately. Have I told you? Friend me.

But I’m mayor of the Church on Foursquare. And she knows it. And somehow or other… she thinks it’s kind of cool.

I feel us growing closer, and there’s just something about her. She tells me that she likes my hair shorter, and that I shouldn’t grow it out again. That was the last secret I kept. And I kept that one pretty good. So for now, this will just be our secret. (Don’t tell anyone!)

I do not understand this renaissance of 3-D that we’re experiencing now, and I am incredibly angered as I see 3-D leave the movie theaters, and come into consumer electronics. (In my professional opinion, 3-D belongs in theme parks and the eighties.)

As a filmmaker, many people would probably expect me to say “I love 3-D! It adds a whole new dimension to filmmaking! (Literally!)” But it just takes the viewers attention away from the picture! 3-D forces viewers to focus on one or two particular objects. People don’t see the background, they don’t notice it. If this 3-D craze were to continue (more on that in a sec) filmmakers would become more and more lazy, and the quality of films would go down majorly.

So is 3-D a craze?

NO!!!!! STOP BUYING 3-D TELEVISIONS AND CAMCORDERS AND ALL THAT OTHER JUNK!

Ahem.

It’s a fad, JUST LIKE IT WAS IN THE 70′S AND 80′S!!! Let’s use common sense here people! 3-D WAS big, then it died, then it comes back, it’s big… (Complete the pattern.)

No, I’m not dating anyone. I’m not married, either.

Two years ago tomorrow I found Jesus Christ.

Time flies so incredibly fast, it seems like last month I struggled with suicide and depression. Or last week that I didn’t believe a “God” could ever exist. It seems like yesterday was January 19, 2009, and I was choking back tears from the Eternal Joy I had been missing.

I recounted the story a bit in my last post here, so I’ll be brief with that point. But the most important thing that ever happened to me, was during that night, when I got down onto the floor, on my knees. I put my hands together and said, “uh… Hi God…”

But I was stopped.

Before I could ever make an intelligent thought, before I could beg for forgiveness from my sins of the past years of my life, or plead for happiness in life, God interjected. “Welcome home Doug. Today, all the angels and saints are rejoicing because you’ve returned. Now go to bed, we have big plans for you.”

I can’t even think of that event without tearing up. God loved me so much, and He had such a frank way of saying it. He WANTED me to believe in Him, to have a relationship with Him, to live in His Divine Will. And, then, what’s more?! He said He had plans! Big plans! (Of course, I know now that every plan God makes is big. Even the ones that are small.)

For so long I was lost. Fumbling and tripping my way through darkness, I had a candle, but it wasn’t lit.

When I opened my doors for Jesus I not only made a turning point in my life, but it was, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the happiest moment I have ever lived. It’s the kind of moment that will not be triumphed in terms of awesome until I meet Jesus in His Kingdom: When I can throw my arms around Him into a big hug.

I haven’t been perfect, not by any sense of the word, but I’m always improving. Always striving to become closer to that Light… that Marvelous Light that reached so far into the darkness to pull me up.

For two years I have been in an active relationship with Jesus.

I haven’t looked back, and I haven’t been happier.

On January 19, 2009, I stayed up late into the night, reading Me, Myself, and Bob by Phil Vischer. I finished the book, cried, thought, and then… prayed. For the first time in my life I prayed. Throughout that first experience I was nervous. I put my sweaty palms together and weaved my fingers in between each other, locking those hands together. I got down on my knees and I remember our dialogue perfectly.

I said, “uh… Hi God…” and He said to me, “Welcome home Doug. Today, all the angels and saints are rejoicing because you’ve returned. Now go to bed, we have big plans for you.”

Whoa…

A few months later I made a video called Where Is My Tiger? The video that would turn into Blue Squid Productions.

Since that fateful Winter night, I’ve read Me, Myself, and Bob countless times, tonight, I just finished it for the billionth, and no matter how many times I hear that “True Story About God, Dreams, and Talking Vegetables” I still learn more each time.

God knows what He wants from me, and therefore, what I do with my life is none of my business. A lot of the stupid things that have come out of Blue Squid Productions this year, (The “new focus,” “Paul’s Prank,” etc.) did not come from the Will of God. They came from me, a flawed human who gets too excited sometimes.

Upon reflecting I thought, “I’m going to have to end Blue Squid Productions… This creative outlet that has been there for me for nearly two years now, and changed my life immeasurably, is done. I need to move on.”

I didn’t know what I would be moving onto, but God spoke a bit clearer then. The idea is not to give up Blue Squid Productions, which came from Him, but to make sure it stays with Him.

It goes something like this: God brought Blue Squid Productions into my life, and I snatched it from Him. I did my own thing with it – AND THAT WAS WRONG!!! I don’t need to leave Blue Squid Productions, I need to bring God back into it. God is in it still, in the sense that I pop in and pray, and put a Bible verse at the end of my videos, but some of these concepts come from Doug. Not God.

Ideas develop in my wonderful brain that God gave me. Concepts birth from my little human fancy.  Those aren’t the videos I want to make, those aren’t the stories I want to tell. I have no right to claim that my life or my ministry are for God, when I don’t give the Man any say!

That’s what it needs to be about now. I don’t want to do some crummy video “for God,” I want to create an amazing video with God.

Old news, I know. But new opinions.

Today, I saw a news show that my father was watching report that kids are trying to find salvia for themselves, just because Miley did it. I can’t find any reports of this online, but I know it must be true to some extent. Kids don’t know what to do, they need someone to look up to, an example. Their parents might work for a while, but parents become “geeks” in the tween stage. When Miley Cyrus hit the scene, she had an image of a dainty little small-town girl who reflected the greatest values. That’s not true at all. Her father was a best-selling country artist.

Here’s the thing: kids didn’t look up to Miley Cyrus, they looked up to Miley Stewart, who Miley portrayed on the Disney Channel sitcom, Hannah Montana. It’s not uncommon at all for a star to portray a character that shares their name. Everyone who performs under their own name in any situation (Especially when someone else is writing the script.) is performing a different character to some extent. I know that I do that.

“Doug” is a character, who just happens to share my name. He’s not a lot like me at all. I am myself when I do vlogs and stuff, but in other videos, Doug is Kermit the Frog.

Anydoodles, kids look up to a character, which is understandable, and the portrayer of that character does something bad, kids want to do that bad thing too.

This reflects the responsibility that children’s entertainers have. We need to think, we can’t tweet the way Kanye West does. (Sometimes I deliberate long and hard about tweets.) We can’t be perfect, but we have to be darn close to it.

I was sick yesterday and decided to watch a Disney Channel film. I admired the brand that Disney Channel has, they have a pool of performers that they use for everything, and kids love it. In a way, its kind of what I want to do with Blue Squid Productions. I want a brand with a collection of characters that can be used for anything. (More like the Muppets then Disney Channel.)

As Christians, if you are a Christian reader, as I assume most of my readers are, because I… direct Christian films, we can’t censor what kids are watching, and we shouldn’t try, but we can do two things SUPPLEMENT it, and DISCUSS it.

Supplement it with wholesome media, Christian shows. For every episode of Hannah Montana they watch, show them a VeggieTales video (Or, more preferably, a Blue Squid Productions video!)

Discuss it as Christians. Talk with your kids about what they’ve watched, and explain why it should/shouldn’t be listened to. Hannah Montana can tell the kids that you won’t be happy until you have a boyfriend, you tell your kids that Jesus didn’t have a boyfriend… or a girlfriend.

Christians are fighting a losing battle against old media, but we’re going to win in the end. They might have Mickey Mouse leading their army, but we’ve got God on our side.

And thus ends the long-rambly blog post about nothing and everything.

Music is a big part of who I am. I sing or air-drum or beat box or hum or whistle almost endlessly, but I actually hated music as a kid. I’d watch The Muppet Show or a Disney movie with my family and practically fall asleep during the songs. I hated music. I didn’t listen to music ever, I listened to books on tape. Then I started to perform in theatre and someway I found the amazing-ness of music.

Songwriting has always been a great way to express myself, especially now that I’ve learned so many different styles. I’ve even tried my hand at writing opera a few times. (I’ve probably mentioned before, I have several half-finished scores lying around my studio. Some of them are concepts that I will never let go of, so SOMEDAY there will be a libretto with my name at the top!)

The other day I was confused about something, so I turned my iPod on shuffle and in about two minutes I had learned something from Hilary Duff. (Insert joke about me having a Hilary Duff album here.)

It relaxes, it teaches, it motivates, it allows me to express myself.

It’s music: and it’s pretty freaking awesome.

Oh yeah! THAT blog!

Yes! It has been a while, and I am so sorry for leaving you behind bloggie. I’ve been so busy!! Everything that’s been going on and keeping me busy is either boring or shouldn’t be talked about. (I’ve recently began preparation to start my second business.)

I promise to post on you again!… STARTING NOW!!!

Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about my cat, (His name is Binky.) and my relationship with him.

I’ve never been the world’s best pet-owner, but it seems I’ve always got an animal living with me. I also have a frog. His name is Bakery. (And yes, I know, it IS the best name!)

I talk to myself an awful lot, and that’s because I’m crazy. But I also talk to my cat, which is probably more healthy.

I call him my friend, and he is. I love my cat. He really brightens days a lot for me. Raised the guy up from a kitten, and we’ve helped each other through hard times and made them good times.

We’ve changed each other’s lives, him and I. For the better, no doubt, but I feel our friendship… losing its luster?

He meows when he wants to be let out or fed, so I do those things.

We used to cuddle up and sleep together, (You don’t need to point it out in the comments, because I already know that that’s what she said.) but I suppose he outgrew that.

Maybe its not him. Maybe it’s ME!

I feel like a bad friend, a despite the aforementioned busy-ness of my life, I want to spend more time with him. Put the foot forward to be a better friend.

And that is hard.

It’s hard because I can’t text him and ask him if he wants to hang out. I can’t follow him on Twitter or friend him on Facebook. I need to actually be with him in reality. Not that I have issues being with PEOPLE in reality, but the communication that takes place digitally really helps us get together IRL.

I’ll keep you updated.

And these 366 words have wasted about two minutes of your life.

I loved the film, and give it a weak “A” letter grade, because it had some negative points.

I feel that the opening dragged a bit. That might just be because a feature film requires, and allows for, more exposition then a YouTube video, but as a viewer, I’m accustomed to seeing Fred jump right into the action.

According to studio executives, kids like to watch shows starring teenagers (Hence, the success of Hannah Montana, and whatnot.) so the people at Nick decided it would be a good idea to make the film take place nine years after the world of the YouTube videos, but pretend that it didn’t. (It is a known fact that Fred Figglehorn in six years old, but in the film, Fred attended “Lawrence Middle School” and said that he was fifteen, another error, since most fifteen year old kids aren’t in middle school.)

That might of been a mistake by the film’s creative team (Lucas Cruikshank, writer/director/star of all the FRED videos, didn’t have a writing credit.) or might of just been their obseassiveness to “appeal to viewers.” But a big newsflash for tunnel vision studio execs – kids do not only watch older characters. Fred’s YouTube channel has over one million subscribers, clearly they will want to watch someone YOUNGER!

Viewers fell in love with a six year old Fred, and Nick forced a fifteen year old Fred on us.

The voice of Fred, which is a very well known sound, was lower. This might be because so many people are annoyed by the character’s voice, or it might of been a creative decision, based on the nine years (and puberty) that have passed.

When the film began, I noticed its TV-G rating, it seems that it was a little censored (Which is odd, because FRED has a rating of TV-Y, which is more kid-friendly.) For instance, Fred never mentioned that his dad was in prison. He said “my dad isn’t here, but he isn’t dead.” That could mean a divorce! The same thing happened with Fred’s mom. Her alcoholism was implied, but never spelled it out.

There were some other continuity errors, that most people wouldn’t of noticed, I won’t go into those.

But, aside from its downsides, the film was great. It was funny, and stayed generally true to the character of Fred Figglehorn. Lucas Cruikshank is a new media pioneer. He was one of the first (If not the first) YouTubers to get into wide merchandising (With Hot Topic).

I really hope Cruikshank stays where he is, in new media. I can’t say I’d be wholly behind a FRED television show, unless Lucas had full creative control, which he would never get, because he’s seventeen. In the future, I see Lucas bouncing to old media a bit, but sticking with new media for the most part.

I hope he does stay with new media. He should! It’s a great platform, and its where he belongs. It is the future, and I hope Cruikshank has enough sense to stay with it.

EDIT – I kind of focused on the negatives of the film, which I shouldn’t of, since it was hacking amazing! But I do want to point out – my least favorite part of the film was Fred’s new catch phrase – “Gammit.” He should of said what he always has, “Garnit!” which is funnier. (And, it properly replaces the… *looks around, whispers…* the D-word…)

I should do that on set, when I can see the actors in the environment. This, of course, means a lot less of me in the actual videos.

Spilt Milk, the new focus, and everything in my career so far, has been a learning process. As I said in episode 9 of The SquidCast, I thought I was great, when I was just barely good, so my films started to suck massively. I’m still learning what works, what doesn’t, and how to make these films look awesome.

On a completely unrelated note, I’ve been thinking a lot recently about me, as a musician.

I want to become more a rapper. I’ve been writing some raps with a more serious tone, and want to do them up right. That means no beat-boxing. Drums and whatnot. I’ve been working on some tracks, and its really fun! I’m trying to figure out the best way to share them with you guys.

Now, back to editing! Gotta get this thing done by Thursday!

With the whole new schedule thing happening, lately I’ve been very busy, and even (I’ll admit) kind of worried. Life has been such a roller coaster of emotions, mainly because of Blue Squid Productions, which is my art and my work.

I’m worried – how am I going to do this?! Can I really put out two videos a week? Especially as production value gets higher, and each video takes longer!? At the same time, I’m so super excited! These films are going to be (I hope…) amazing. It’s a lot of work to get this started, but I know that I’ll eventually fall into a groove of production. (I’m even going to be substantially ahead by the end of the month! Woo!)

But I’ve been thinking.

I’m pouring out tons of effort and life force into this thing I’ve been calling “Blue Squid Productions,” and with all this extra work, I’ve been wondering. Big questions, like what it is, where it’s going, and as a half-joke, I’ve said “What am I doing with my life?!” several times.

It is not the most popular thing in the world, with our whopping 41 (Woo-hoo!) subscribers, it’s growing. We’re putting out so much content. Two videos a week, a podcast, blog posts, music, DVDs, our massive website… the list goes on. Whoever wants it, they can have a lot.

With this new focus, the quality of my films are going to skyrocket.

Right now, my films are great… for a teenager with a converted spare-bedroom studio. Part of this new focus is turning them into genuinely good films. Good films with good stories, good effects, good acting, good everything. When these videos come out, I want people to put them up against Michael Gallagher or Julian Smith films. Even Steven Spielberg! Compare them! This is my thing, and I’m done playing with a greenscreen. I’m getting hardcore now. I’m getting good.

I’m building this… empire… I have people telling me that I’ll be famous, I’ll be a household name. People telling me how far I’m going to go. My vocal coach even says “I hope I’m alive long enough to see all the great things you do!”

People are flat-out telling me that I’m going to be the next Walt Disney.

I think about someone else who wanted to build an empire like this. Someone who is a big influence on my life. I think of Phil Vischer, creator of (Among other things) VeggieTales. It was his dream from the very beginning. To… be Walt Disney, to build an empire. But that was not what the Lord intended for Phil. The dream came to life, then died, because Phil held it too close.

A quote from Mr. Vischer’s book, Me, Myself, And Bob: (If you haven’t already, read the darn thing!) ”Why would God want us to let go of our dreams? Because anything I am unwilling to let go of is an idol, and I am in sin.”

I also had that dream. The dream to build the world’s largest entertainment brand. To be at the head of that brand. I wanted nothing more, then to be the next Walt Disney.

In January of 2009, I gave up my dreams. I offered them up to God, and became a Christian.

I told my Heavenly Father that I would serve Him and live in His Will. Now, all of a sudden… it’s coming back. I’m building this awesome brand, I’m getting better and better at film-making… and I’m growing.

Back to what I was originally talking about.

While Blue Squid Productions isn’t the biggest thing in the world, it’s huge. It’s huge because I gave up my dreams for Christ, and now He’s bringing them back to me… But so much better then before. (New Media was not a part of that original forecast at all… nor was YouTube… so He modified them, but I like this so much better!)

In a few months, I’ll be turning sixteen years old, and a few months after that, my brand will turn two.

I refer to Blue Squid Productions as if it is multiple people, because it is. It is me and my boss. Me and my partner. It’s kind of like a Scrooge-Crachit relationship… at the end of the book. (I’m allowed to use coal!)

It is part of our business plan – get really good, then start marketing and advertising. Start putting our stuff out there, getting people to notice. Funny, how when we “weren’t trying to get people to notice” we amassed 41 YouTube subscribers, almost 10,000 video hits, 15 podcast subscribers, and I have 109 followers on Twitter.

Wait a minute… if that’s what happened before shoving our stuff in people’s faces, what happens when we do?

I ask myself the question – What am I doing with my life?

I’m doing amazing things with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I am living out my dream to be a film-maker. Trying to make a living in new media. My films are about to get really good, then my audience will explode.

Move over iJustine.

Going on this vacation to Florida, I knew I wanted to visit the world’s largest McDonald’s, which still has a lot of McDonaldland’s prescence, such as statues, murals, and even a Mac Tonight animatronic.

We woke up at 5 AM for our day trip to Disney‘s Magic Kingdom, just so we could stop and have breakfast at the McDonald’s. The store was amazing. I was completely geeking out. Unfortunatly, what I was most excited for (The afforementioned Mac Tonight) is only turned on from 9-11.

Being the ultimate geek, I took a bazillion photos. Check them out in this Photobucket album for a few of them.

As I mentioned in my last vlog, I’d be going to theatre camp for my sixth and final year. Today was the last day of camp, now I’m sad.

Not sad, so much as emotional. I’ve been offered a job as a counselor, which, barring death or divine commandment, I will probably take. It’s just amazing about how much of my character and identity came from this camp over the years. Throughout this amazing journey, I’ve grown up.

Seven years ago I came to my first theatre camp (The camp I went to for the following six years replaced the first one.) as a shy kid with short hair. Now, I’ve left my final year as a loud kid with fro.

I sang the finale number of the show with tears clouding my eyes, thinking of this great experience.

I can’t even begin to thank all the wonderful counselors and teachers who have taught me so much. Not only about performing, but life itself.

This camp instilled in me a love of performing, which would eventually lead me to Christ, which saved me from killing myself.

Today was the last day of my last camp as a camper; thus ends an era in the life of Doug.

My first thought was “Well, that sucks.” then I filed it away.

THEN people start blowing this out of proportion saying it is a “sign.”

Don’t freak out people, God isn’t crazy, and in Matthew 24:36, “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” [KJV.] So its not the apocalypse.

Satan has not conquered the Kingdom, because Satan is sin, and (If you’ve seen Phil Vischer‘s What’s In The Bible?) you would know, sin cannot be near the Father.

So stop freaking out, since we should always be ready to join the Father anyways.

Today I took my French final. The foreign language requirement for graduation in my school is two credits, so I’m done! The only time I will speak French is singing along with The Little Mermaid.

I initially signed up to take French because (Like all the great decisions in my life) I had this great idea for a French rock opera, and I’m an artist, and when an artist wants to write an opera in another language they learn the language!

That opera will not happen (If it does, the ticket will say Music By Doug Hanna, Lyrics By Doug Hanna & BabelFish) because I am not good at French. BUT I AM DONE!

I also took my Biology final today, due to the wonderment of computers I learned that I got a B on it! (Yesterday I took English, which I feel confident with; and Theatre Arts, which felt like a seventh grade quiz.) Four down, four to go! Two more days…

In other, less exciting news, a new video was released today from Blue Squid Productions. Youth Minister Paul Presents The Rosary! This video was actually pretty interesting, I’ve been wanting to do a video about the Rosary forever (Somewhere I actually have a copy of an unproduced World According to Jimmy screenplay, about the topic; one of the first World According to Jimmy videos I ever wrote.)

I made new friends, learned a lot about myself, and strengthened my relationship with the LORD.

But anydoodles, I was blogging about school. Tomorrow are my first two final exams: English and Theatre Arts. Friday is Biology and French (I’m NEVER GOING TO HAVE TO SPEAK FRENCH AGAIN! WOOT!). Monday is Geometry and Gym. Tuesday is American Government and Chorus, then I’m done!

I’ve been getting TONS of great comments, from Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and (of course) Dailybooth.

While getting awesome comments (from people who may become/are fans) is amazing, but what’s been absolutely thrilling is the amount of response I’ve gotten from the geniuses behind the website.

First, I’ve gotten some amazing responses from the official Dailybooth Twitter Feed. Including an RT of my tweet about the video.

David Myers, a Dailybooth web designer, commented on one of my Dailybooth pictures, saying “Looking good dude!” AND “You can use it [my web design] all you want as long as you promise to include them in awesome music videos.”

Brian Pokorny, the CEO of Dailybooth, thanked me for the video on his personal Twitter Feed.

Finally, Jon Wheatley, the founder of Dailybooth, posted on Friend Feed about the video, in which he said, “LMAO!!!! wow. This is the most amazingly hilarious dailybooth fan vid ever.” He also gave me the honor of following me on Dailybooth.

It’s amazing what this video is doing! Please keep telling people about it!

Now the major events of today have gone… I uploaded the video, then made an official statement on the Blue Squid Productions Blog.

Then (And it starts to get good!) I wrote an email to Dailybooth, and tweeted about the video.

I went off to serve at the homeless kitchen. When I got back, I saw that I had 23 emails in my inbox! I also see that Dailybooth’s official Twitter account RT (Retweeted) my post! (THAT ACCOUNT HAS 5,553 FOLLOWERS!)

When I go to check my email, I see a bunch of emails from Dailybooth! A lot of NEW FOLLOWERS! ALSO, people were commenting on one of my photos from yesterday saying that they loved the video!

I’m so excited! It’d be sooo awesome if this video went viral. So please, please, please, PLEASE tell your friends! Tweet about it! Blog/Vlog about it! ‘BOOTH ABOUT IT!

Religion is NOT an ethnicity! It is not inherited from parents!

I wanted to scream at the girl, just because it is so ignorant to say this kind of thing. (I actually calmly explained to her why this was wrong.)

Do you or do you not believe Jesus Christ was the Son of God, and died for you?

Why don’t you do some research and formulate your own opinion instead of letting your parents tell you what to think!!!! (I’m proof its possible. I am a teenager, in a different political party then my parents, and a different denomination of the Christian Church.)

Of course, you won’t believe in everything taught by a specific faith (At least probably not.) but Jewish and Catholic?!?! Really?!?! JUST CALL YOURSELF AGNOSTIC DARN IT!

That is my rant. (If this is your first time reading my blog, I usually try to make it funnier/less angry… I’m just frusterated today.)

The Rule Is – You can not celebrate this month without also celebrating Women’s Pride Month, Black History Month, and do crap for the Earth on a day besides Earth Day.

I’m so excited that I won, really, I am.

Here’s the whole story (So in five years I can look back on how big a dork I am.)

I was sitting in my studio arranging a song, then I wanted to go see if the video rendering on the other computer was finished, it was! So I turn on the web browser to check my email really quick, and I saw that they posted a video on my Facebook wall! I FREAKED out and called my friend Eric.

I was just so excited!

Now excuse me, I have to get back to work (Which actually means doing a little happy dance in my studio.)

Yesterday, scientists at the J Craig Venter Institute created the first artificial life. Just a little single-celled bacterium.

I hope it gives them all a cold.

Yeah, I’m a little bitter about the whole thing. We have plenty of cells in the world, we really don’t need your help Dr. Venter.

The cell seems to be behaving like normal cells, and is re-producing, but a big criticism within the scientific world is that if this little dude was in the real world, its behavior would be unpredictable. (It might grow 10000 times its size and eat us all!!!!… or not…)

The teams next goal is to create an actual chain of amino acids (The stuff that comprises DNA) and make more sophisticated artificial life.

Now let’s discuss ethics!

DON’T TRY TO PLAY GOD!

‘Nuff said.

But in all seriousness, this isn’t safe. Like I said before – outside of the perfect lab environment, there is no way of knowing what it does. (This is kind of frightening, since the labs this thing was made in are located in California, and in my backyard, Maryland.) If an intern sneezes while bringing Dr. Venter his mail it could cause a mass epidemic!
Think about what would happen if this “fell into the wrong hands!” What if Osama Bin Laden kidnapped this institution?!?

This isn’t efficient. This one cell (Which is multiplying by the billions) cost forty million US Dollars. (If each cell of the human body was made this way it would cost $2000000000000000000000, but I do realize these cells multiply, and it wouldn’t cost that much.)

And finally, as I said previously. We have quite enough cells, thank you very much. You can give me stuff about replacing cells, like stem-cell research is shooting for (An entirely different can of worms…) but we’re all imperfect, embrace your flaws or assume the position of a GREY BLOB. (Don’t tell me I don’t know what it feels like. I am legally blind, cannot see more then six inches away from my face, and cannot use contact lenses. My brother also has many physical health issues that he probably would not appreciate me elaborating on.)

But what does the man himself say? Dr. Venter’s own words, as he was asked “Are you playing God?”

“Well, that’s a term that comes up every time there’s a new medical or scientific breakthrough associated with biology. It’s been a goal of humanity from the earliest ages to try and control nature. That’s how we got agriculture, that’s how we got domesticated animals. This is a new age in our understanding… it’s a baby step in our understanding how life fundamentally works. And maybe how we can get some new handles, trying to control these microbial systems to benefit humanity.”

In other words, yes, he is playing God. (But he thinks okay because we’ve done it before.)

Frankly, no we haven’t. Agriculture is utilizing natural resources. Domestication is taming natural animals. It’s not making new life! Growing a flower and having a baby are two entirely different things. And believe me – humans should learn to control themselves before they try to control the rest of the world.

This is not what God meant when He declared the first man in charge of the garden.

Obviously, I believe in new media, I believe in the internet as a platform, I believe in this.

When I think of my favorite celebrities, I (I’m not kidding) think of Rhett McLaughlin, Link Neal, Justine Ezarik, John & Hank Green.

In five years, this wonderful website has changed the world.

Jim Henson inspired me a lot. Anyone who knows me is quite aware of that fact. I’ve blogged several times about this man, his films, his art, his legacy.

I could write endlessly about Jim. He was a genius. He will always remain my favorite film-maker.

Whenever I think about this day, my mind reels. I’ve heard stories from other Muppet geeks about the day they came home from school and “heard that Kermit’s friend died.” I can never think about the 1990 special, The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson without crying (I’m a sobbing mess, by the time Robin The Frog is reading cards and tenderly says, “We will miss you Jim Henson.”

Sometimes I wonder if Jim is watching me up above. I wonder if Christ has told him all that I will do (No matter what it is.)

So, Mr. Henson, if you’re reading this from your vantage point in the sky: I miss you, even though we never shared a planet.

I’m always getting better at film-making it seems (I hope!) Video editorial comes easier, directing is getting better, cinematography starting to show a bit of art in its corners. The next DVD from Blue Squid Productions is going to be AMAZING. Most definitely my best work. I’m getting so good, so fast, I started to worry. What if I peaked? What if I stopped becoming a better film-maker, and then started to (gulp) get worse.

Then I actually started noticing a legitimate decline in my screenwriting.

This was unnecessary though. I wrote one bad video, big deal. Then I started thinking about characters. I’ve always thought it was hard to teach a lesson in A Boy & His Penguin. Not because Scot is hard to write for, but because he’s alone. It’s hard to learn a lesson from yourself. In an early version of the A Boy & His Penguin, Episode 9 screenplay, Jesus Christ actually appears before Scot. (When you don’t have a metaphor… you don’t need one?)

Recently I’ve noticed its even harder to teach a lesson with Handsy & Glover. Why can’t every video series have a youth minister in it to conviently explain the lesson, like The World According to Jimmy? (Although those screenplays are getting much more cinematic, especially with the upcoming “Find Out What It Means To Me.“

I worried about peaking as a screenwriter, then  I thought about that DVD again. Almost everyone who reads this screenplay loves it. I’ve been referring to it as 70 pages of beauty. I thought about it– what makes this one so special? Then I noticed that the show has over twenty characters (A Blue Squid Productions Record!)

The more characters, the easier it is to teach a lesson?

I don’t know, perhaps that is the key.

There’s also something else bothering me. For a long period of time, I’ve been hoping for a partner. Someone to help me with all this stuff. Of course, we’ve seen a couple people come and go through Blue Squid Productions, but non of them are as passionate about this the way I am. Sure, I’m doing fine by myself, but as I said in a recent video, “Sometimes I get lonely, that’s when I start talking to the puppets.”

Keep following my career. I’m working with the greatest partner ever in Jesus Christ. This is gonna be an awesome ride, and while, I may never “hit the big time,” I’ll still be living for and with Christ in all His Glory.

While I’ve been away, we had to deal with the hacking attack and phishing virus on BlueSquidProductions.com, which was not so fun, but we’ve also had some good stuff!

For example, two new videos! Today saw the release of Meet Chad, but Saturday brought to us the first installment of Celebrities I Admire!

It’s a countdown series of five videos. (I know that their are actors and film-makers fighting it out right now in Hollywood over who will win.) The series was shot a while ago (You can tell by my glasses.) and its been festering on my hard drive for a few weeks.

The series will get very personal (Especially towards the end.) All five videos (And this was not intended at all.) hold a beautiful overlying message. More on that later– I don’t want to ruin the ending!

The realization I had? She’s not that good of a friend. I’d like to give a few examples, but she might read this and get angry and I don’t like making people angry (But people close to me can probably deduce who I’m referring to.)

I guess it’s part of high school, people changing their minds about who they want to be friends with, but that’s not the important part. I hold no one closely but Jesus Christ, and in recent times this “friend” has become more important then Christ.

It hurts a little bit. I loved her, I trusted her with secrets I’ve never told anyone else, I put her before other friends (which might of made me a bad friend, I’m going to do my best to fix this.) and now she’s gone. She changed and now she’s gone. I don’t want her as a prevalent part of my life anymore, not after what she did to me.

I summed this whole thing up pretty nicely in a Facebook status update (Posted at 12:11 AM)
My best friend is Jesus. It’s not anyone else, espescially people who, in recent times, have led me to believe they are better friends then they actually are.

This lesson that I learned was something I already learned. (See above link)

In that post that I linked to earlier I featured a poem. A few lines of that poem say: “My best friend, my only, has left me to die. / But I’m stronger then that; I’ll try not to cry. / My Lord Jesus loves me more, / I’ll never see Him walk out the door.”

And that’s what I needed to learn. That’s what I should of known before investing so much love into a “friend.” Jesus will always be there, no one else will be there as much. If I tried to call my “friend” at 10 past midnight she’d of been angry. If I would of called an actual friend at 10 past midnight, I’d of gotten grumbles and (depending on who I called) some snark. Christ welcomed my “calling” at midnight.

So that’s the moral of the story. Something I already learned. What a terrible climax… This “friend” will no longer be considered a “best friend” in my book. She will no longer be considered a “good friend” in my book. Perhaps, “casual friend,” but she’s cruising on her way to acquaintance.

I need to stop investing so much of myself in a social life. (Not that I’m exactly going to parties every week or hanging out often.) I’m an artist, I can write music and screenplays and sing-along albums. I”m a servant to the Cross, I can meditate, study Scripture, and make art for Christ.

I went into the glasses store thinking about possible getting thicker frames, because some people I think are cool wear them. I didn’t like the way I looked at first, but I tried on a few models, and I ended up liking ‘em!

Their Calvin Klein (Probably the only “designer” thing I own) and are quite comfortable. People are giving me a lot of compliments, and some people didn’t even realize I wore glasses before!

I’ve received a lot of complaints about the map and layout of the site, and realized that I should do something about it. Everything is more streamlined and orginized. For a full update, check out The Official Blog of Blue Squid Productions’ post on the matter.

So I checked out some of their videos and really liked their videos. Recently they announced that they were going to be having a fan video contest.

With YouTube’s new video page, it’s easy to see how many videos we’ve uploaded. That number is (As of now) 55.

Some how or other, I’ve uploaded more than one video per week this year. I don’t know how that happened, but it did!

Not to mention, I’m working a lot more this year, so it’ll be interesting to make another post on April 8th itself (The anniversary of Where Is My Tiger?) and see exactly how many we got out in a year.

Speaking of videos, I just concluded the Blue Squid Productions Awesome April Mini-Marathon Madness with the upload of our latest video, Bible Stories with Doug: Easter, The Resurrection of Jesus Christ, looking at hits for these videos, and considering the fact that we didn’t market at all, I’m very pleased, so we’ll possibly do that again!

But that’s the greatest part of Springtime! At least here in Maryland, you don’t HAVE to deal with hot! It’s just warm. Nice, wonderful, warm!

The hardest part though is the time in the beginning of Spring when it’s still cold in the mornings but then it gets warm around noon. Today is one of those days. I’m editing videos and screenwriting all day. I”m sitting in shorts and a hoodie shivering at the computer. It’ll get better though.

You’ll start to see a lot more outdoor stuff for Blue Squid. Not just because it’s nice, but because the studio gets so terribly hot. Because the ceiling is so low in there we can never have the ceiling fan going while we’re shooting. That’s how we were for Godtastic! production  last June. It was grueling.

But anyways, Spring is here and boy am I ready for it.

According to the latest research, 65% of kids from Christian homes today stop attending church as soon as they graduate from high school. Our kids don’t find our faith meaningful enough to stay engaged into adulthood. Many experts believe real, meaningful engagement begins with a thorough understanding of the Bible – of why we’re here. The purpose of life. Knowing individual Bible stories is beneficial. But knowing the overall story of God and what he’s done for us through history is absolutely vital.

Wow… quite a scary statistic, isn’t it? It’s also the driving force of Phil Vischer‘s latest project: What’s In The Bible with Buck Denver!

I’m here to tell you that Vischer’s newest show is AMAZING! What’s In The Bible tackles the mission that is long overdue: to create a kid’s video series to really take children through the Bible. All of it. Not just Genesis, Exodus, and then Jesus. Everything.

Kids (and adults too!) don’t know enough about scripture anymore. The Bible starts to matter when they walk into Church, they walk out of Church and put their apathy for the greatest book ever back on. So we need a show. We need a lot of shows. We need enough programming out there to connect the dispersed time of Mass, Sunday School, and Vacation Bible Schools. We need to start with kids; we need to be throwing God and The Bible in their faces everywhere from TV to the Internet.

So do we all agree that this sort of thing is necessary? Good. Let’s move onto the actual review!

The first two DVDs in the series (In The Beginning, and Let My People Go) hit stores nationwide on March 1, I was lucky enough to receive a preview copy of the first show. Being a big Vischer fan, I was ecstatic. The show features characters from JellyTelly, an online mini-network for kids. The first DVD (of a 13-part series) features two “episodes,” the first of which discusses what the Bible is exactly, and the second discussing the book of Genesis. I really like the idea of having two different episodes, so impatient kids won’t feel pressured to watch the hour-long DVD at once, losing interest half-way through (I can’t see how the could, but you know kids!)

The series holds an interesting format: a bunch of friends hanging out and teaching about the Bible: hilarity ensues! The best way I can describe it would be a Christian version of The Muppet Show, with more relaxed characters. The characters aren’t all together, so the shot is constantly changing to different parts of this long distance conversation: it’ll keep kid’s attention, always wondering where they’ll go next! It has hilarious shtick, running gags, and any type of humor imaginable. They spend the first few minutes of the first episode arguing over what the show will be called. Keep in mind, it’s not a bunch of puppets screaming at each other, its very coherent and concise, with very high production values. The first show also features wonderful music, and I don’t just mean the musical numbers, the original score is great. Honestly, if an album of some of the music wasn’t released it would be a crime.

Now, let’s discuss the lessons. For the most part Christian shows (such as VeggieTales or Bible Stories with Doug) focus on one story at a time. If Buck Denver and his friends are going to cover the whole Bible in 13 hours, they don’t have time to discuss each story for too long. In the second episode of In The Beginning (In which they discuss Genesis) they cover the book as a whole, then a few key stories (Creation, Fall of man, Noah’s Arc, etc.) They also take the time to relate it back to our lives.

The show is fabulous, get to your local Christian bookstore on March 1st and BUY THESE DVDs!!! I know I will be there on that day, ready to buy both DVDs (Despite already having my preview copy of one of them.)

But anywho: I did watch the entire Super Bowl (Well, I was in the room, I was actually working on a project for work while they were doing that thing with the football) but I loved the commercials! (Post on Frames of Film later on my top ten.) So I know that the Saints won.

As soon as I saw it happen I thought to myself: “The Saints won the Super Bowl, why can’t Saints win where it really matters? In the real world.”

And so, in assosciation with Blue Squid Producitons, we’re developing The Saints Challenge! (No way endorsed by the football team or the NFL.)

It’s simple: everyday, do something and be more of a saint. For some people it might involve doing good deeds, for other people it might involve getting closer to God, through reading the Bible or meditating.

It’s as simple as that! Be more of a saint!

This new web site is faster, has more disc space, more bandwidth, gives us e-mail addresses, and much much more!

An example– we used to host our music downloads on MegaUpload, but we’re now putting them on our own server!

Also, we decided to be nice so if you had a link or a bookmark to the old site that site’s page will  have a link to the page you were trying to view. So you don’t have to find it again.

It’s a short post, but it’s big news! This is a great chapter in the life of Blue Squid Productions!

Last night I finished the final season of Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock for the first time. I’ve blogged before that Jim Henson is the greatest film-maker of all time, and all that stuff, but I think I’ve never exactly told  you how I feel about Fraggle Rock. I  love the show. I can (and have) spent entire days doing nothing but watching Fraggle Rock.

The entire idea of the show was crazy. A guy who worked for Henson approached him one day and said that he was leaving the company to produce an international kids show, Jim laughed and said “Why don’t you just do that for us?” Thus: Fraggle Rock was born. Jim said “Since, we’re making an international kids show, why don’t we make one that can stop war?” They wanted at least two original songs in each episode of this weekly show. They wanted hundreds of background characters at one time.

It was a tall order, and a big dream, but Jim had faith in the concept.

Fraggle Rock‘s many story arcs form a very large story arc that spans the whole series. (It doesn’t seem like their connected until the very end.) None of the creatures can see that they are the same! In season one the viewers are shown mostly Fraggles. The Fraggles  love to sing and dance and play and balance pickles on their noses. The other groups just get in the Fraggles’ way: The Gorgs are big and just want to hurt the Fraggles, the Doozers just want to work and build. One line in season 1 sticks out, it’s from episode 22: Junior Gorg thinks he killed a Fraggle and decides to give it a proper funeral “I’ll make it a grave stone… No! Grave stones are for names– Fraggles don’t have names!” The viewers are shocked of course Fraggles have names! They are intelligent life– how can you be so ignorant?!?!

Then in the second season the audience dives into the world of the Doozers. We learn that Doozers don’t just work, but they play too! They even have names! (Many Fraggles were surprised at this realization) Then you realize how selfish you were. Like the Fraggles to the Gorgs, Doozers seemed insignificant to Fraggles. But they are living, breathing creatures.

In the final seasons (No one is quite sure how many there were: Some say 5, some say 4.) the worlds come together. In the episode The Gorg Who Would Be King Junior Gorg sees the world from a Fraggle’s point of view. He learns that they are linked. The Fraggles even learn a little bit.

Then in the final two episodes The Honk of Honks and Change of Address Gobo Fraggle finally talks to the “silly creature” (Human being) named Doc, that he has been hiding from for five years. They learn each other’s names: they learn they have feelings.

The worlds finally come full circle. The Gorgs grow the radishes, the Fraggles eat the radishes, the Doozers build out of the radishes. The water lies in the Fraggle pond, the water goes through pipes up to Doc’s workshop, the Gorg’s retrieve it via the well, the Doozers use it to generate energy. The worlds are all connected.

It’s a beautiful message we all can learn from: We are one world, one earthen family.

Think about it in our world: That ant outside. That insignificant ant, doing nothing but working all day, he has a story. He has a family, and a home, and I’m sure that their is something out there that he enjoys. (Maybe he just enjoys working!) Think about President Obama. He’s big and powerful: the most powerful man in the world. He has a story. He is real. He isn’t just some robot that they push out of the closet every once in a while to do the State of The Union! (Well, he’s not ALWAYS a robot.) He is a human being who was born once, who sleeps at night, gets tired, get’s hair cuts, goes to the bathroom and everything! He is REAL!

Now, I’d like to leave you all with the lyrics to one of my favorite songs from Fraggle Rock:

I had always thought the world was full of mystery.
I had seen so many faces that were strange.
And it sometimes seemed that each one was my enemy:
And I thought our fighting ways would never change.

But I learned to meet my brother in my enemy,

It was actually a funny situation, we were in a brainstorming meeting and the idea of a Valentine’s Day special came up. We almost instantly picked Scot & Rick for the show. Right when I knew we were gonna do it I got this great idea for a song: so yes, Scot is going to sing for a third time. This song is really great though, I think you’ll enjoy it!

And as that first blog post stated: yes, it features a guest star! (Unfortunately, contracts aren’t finalized yet so I can’t drop names.)

So I hope you are looking forward to A Boy & His Penguin, Episode 8 as much as I am!

It was a nice day so I decided to take Jimmy out for a walk. Everyone we saw, Jimmy smiled and waved at. (And I had some business cards just in case!) People really started enjoying seeing Jimmy! One woman honked her car horn from the street just so Jimmy would wave at her! A grown woman honked her horn so a puppet would say “Hi!”

Now– A Brief Tangent:
When Jim Henson and his team (Jocelyn Stevenson, Duncan Kenworthy, and Michael Frith) began to develop the universe that would become Fraggle Rock in the early eighties, some people he talked to thought that Henson might of cracked. His goal from Fraggle Rock? To create world peace.

You didn’t read it wrong. Jim wanted to stop war. With a television show. With puppets dag nabbit!

Well, I don’t know what happened, but there’s still war. (Some might say “Jim failed” but he didn’t. I refuse to admit it. I’M NOT OBSESSED!!!)

But anyways, I was walking down a street with Jimmy when I saw some kids that don’t like me. They’ve tried to intimidate me in the past. They even tell their little brother to beat me up (And that’s actually pretty funny.) I gulped as they considered what they would say to me and out of nowhere Jimmy said to them “HI!” and gave them a big grin and wave. They were shocked for a moment.

They didn’t know what to do. So they threw another insult at me. “What’s wrong with your face??!” Jimmy shot back at them: “You talkin’ ’bout his face? I know! It’s killing me! I have to live with this mug!” They all laughed. Doug exit stage right! As I left they called out “Wait!” “Come Back!” etc.

I entertained them with Jimmy, and these kids that disliked me were laughing with me! Through my joke– through entertaining them– I made a connection. I brought peace to us.

Jim Henson wasn’t crazy, something just went wrong with the execution of his plan.

What’s the difference between Fraggle Rock and Blue Squid Productions?

God.

I have something Jim Henson didn’t have– I have God.

I’ve always said that I don’t need to worry about competition from other brands like The Walt Disney Monster Company. I have God, they don’t.

Fraggle Rock, while being the greatest TV show of all time, did not stop war. It didn’t fulfill its mission. God has given me a HUGE mission (One I’m not ready to reveal yet, only my very closest friend knows of it.) and when I first heard it, I had doubts. But I have God. It’s amazing, and hard to believe, but this mission God has trusted me with– if I stick with God– it’ll happen… I’ll succeed.

Someday I’ll have brunch with Jim Henson. I’ll try to not geek out [much]. But who’s going to be impressed with the other man’s work? The man with beard and frog or man with Jew fro and squid?

So after VeggieTales and Me, Myself,  & Bob he started JellyTelly. Which is a show/mini-network filled with fun stuff for Christian kids. JellyTelly pretty much kicks more butt then any TV show (on the air today, anyway).

And now Mr. Vischer is starting another project. Something that every Christian film-maker has always wanted to do. Create a video series that takes viewers through the entire Bible, from Genesis to Exodus. Phil is doing it with a brand new DVD series, What’s In The Bible? So, go and support Phil, check out the site, and then you can go enjoy some JellyTelly (Or if your not ready to subscribe to JellyTelly, I know this great Christian media brand.)

Now onto the website upgrades!
Most of the changes people will actually notice are on the video pages.

The first one you’ll notice is that each video now has a description at the top of the page, so now you have some idea of what your watching before you click play. When I was writing these I tried to keep them spoiler free, so no worries there. I also added a new navigational setting below each video. These new buttons can take you to the previous video, or the next video. (Example- on the page for A Boy & His Penguin, Episode 2 the previous button will take you to A Boy & His Penguin, Episode 1, on the other side of the interpunct is the next button, this will take you to A Boy & His Penguin, Episode 3)

Finally, we added a button from this great website called “Add This.” This incredible service allows you to share our videos with anyone (That’d be awfully, awfully, nice of you! *Bats eyelashes*) As of now you can only use 11 of the  225  available sharing options (At least on Google Chrome) because the box goes behind the video.

There is also an Add This button on the index page of the website. The index page also now sports a “Watch our latest video” button which links to our most recent release, which is currently A Boy & His Penguin, Episode 7. And, how could I possibly forget our new custom search box from Google. Search our website only! I tried to add an option to “search the web” But couldn’t get it to work. So please enjoy!

I’m interested to see what people think of this one. It was a little breach in the Bible Stories with Doug format (As it featured Jimmy as a guest.) So please– your feedback is important!

One man who has inspired me beyond human capability is Jim Henson. The man is a genius. When he directed, it was magic. When he performed, it was magic. When he sang, it was magic. When he created, it was magic. He had this phenomenal Midas Touch. There’s no such thing as a bad Henson film (And when I say Henson film, I mean a film he actually worked on… now that he’s dead the films are… debatable.) Jim Henson inspired me more than anyone else has. He led me to Christ (indirectly.) and got me interested in film and puppetry. When everyone at school hated me and made fun of me, and when no one at home could give me comfort, I found comfort in the Muppets. I found comfort from Jim Henson. He gave me a dream.

Changing the subject:

Recently I was working on a song. I started to think about Jimmy and an amazing realization hit me: Jimmy is mine.
I actually created a character who was cute (Adorable even!), who had a great personality and voice. Jimmy was MY CHARACTER! I was shocked for a moment. I was literally in awe that I created a character. Then my mind expanded. I thought about our recent video, One Year of Squidishness and all the characters. They were my characters. They were my brain children. I created this wonderful, diverse batch of characters. And the realizations continued further!

I thought about Jim Henson and why everyone liked the Muppets. It was in the character! Jim Henson and his team had created a group of characters, and while separate, came together every now and then. It sounded awfully like what I was doing. I was creating characters. Characters that might just last forever.

It all started with Jimmy. He was the first character I developed. Long before I became Christian I wrote a puppet show script called The Monsters (an idea I still really want to revisit with a Christian spin.) The show featured a little boy, and I named him Jimmy (If you haven’t figured out who he was named after yet, read this post from the top again, you’ll get it.)

The root of all long-lasting franchises in the entertainment world is Character. I achieved character by somehow making Jimmy cute, Scot silly, Blue Bologna…. like Blue Bologna is (I don’t know how to articulate this one…) If I have these euphoric characters now, when I’m 15, think about what I’ll have when I’m 30. Imagine what will be tied to the names Blue Squid Productions and Doug Hanna when I’m 50! I’ll have a whole world at this rate! Hopefully I just don’t peak for a while!

So take that for what it is. I developed a batch of characters just like the greatest film-maker of all time did, and I’m young… Now to quote probably the third best film-maker of all time (And no, I’m not calling myself #2) Walt Disney, There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow!

One of the first blog posts over there details our January releases. I don’t want to regurgitate that blog over here, so I’ll just direct you over to the official blog post.

Y’know what else happened? For the first time in the history of forever, Blue Squid Productions is ahead of our production schedule! W00T! Its nothing big, we’re just one day ahead of our (Crammed) production schedule. If things keep going this way we’ll actually pull another day and be ahead not one, but two days! Crazy, right? We’re becoming efficient!

We have tons of more news coming up! Big things that will really change the way Blue Squid Productions exists, but its too early to tell you anything, so I will just continue to tease!

Well, I’m quite busy these days, so I’m cutting this one short, Merry Christmas!

Short post, I know, but I’m about to watch my first Blu•Ray! EEEE!!!!!

I shall begin with a brief update on Blue Squid Christmas specials: We almost have everything done. Just a few minor edits on A Boy & His Penguin Episode 6 and The World According to Jimmy: One Baby Boy; and then I have to edit the music video being released on the 27^th.

Why am I so far behind (my original deadline was October 29^th)? Well, first I got Bronchitis, and then rehearsals for A Christmas Carol: The Musical (Click Here For Info!) are beginning to get heavy, and now what is slowing me down? I’m going to Florida!!! Weee!

I’ll be visiting Walt Disney World in Orlando, so be sure to follow my updates on Twitter!

So, I’ll be celebrating my birthday and Turkey day with Mickey Mouse.

While I’m here let’s discuss the multiple religious meanings of Thanksgiving (Because it actually isn’t an American holiday)

So for those of you who don’t go to public school, or maybe are deaf, or have forgotten Elementary school, let’s review!

The Pilgrims fled from Europe to seek religious freedoms. They wanted to worship God and live in the Will of Jesus Christ. They wanted to do it peacefully. It’s important to note that they didn’t run all the way over here because they were scared, they had strong faith, they just wanted to do it peacefully! They didn’t want to cause issues.

So the Mayflower sails across the sea and all the Christian boys and girls in their funny hats and buckle shoes eat corn with the Indians (There was no turkey, look it up)

Why did they have this big feast? It was about love and peace. They wanted to say “AMERICANS! We come in peace!” They wanted to make friends with their new neighbors.

It was also a feast to celebrate the happiness of arriving safely, God had been amazing just letting them survive (Only one person joined Jesus over the course of the trip) and they were grateful (or to use another word, thankful)

So what can we learn? When you drive 14 hours to Florida, be grateful only 1 person dies and greet the Floridians happily (Do that Spock thing)… oh wait, that’s just me…

But seriously, just take the obvious theme of being thankful (for food, for friends, for family, for fun, for life) and then also be thankful that you aren’t with Jesus (and the main course of dinner) and that God has so graciously granted you another day of life.

And also, be friendly! Is someone in your neighborhood alone for the holiday? Somebody missing that home cooked meal? Invite them over; there’s plenty of butterball and/or tofu to go around.

Of course (No Dinner Pun Intended) you can tell God you’re thankful, but you can also show Him. Enjoy the time off of work and school to thank God in prayer and meditation, I’ll be enjoying it on Splash Mountain.

Well, have a holly, jolly Thanksgiving, a time of year we’re invited to remember just how many blessings we have.

Now onto the meat of this post.

Yesterday, I lost my best friend.

I won’t get into the meat of that soap opera, but she decided we should no longer be friends. It hurt me. It stung me. I cried. I wasn’t sure what to do. All the while I knew God was with me, and I should buck up (I always am a bright person) but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. All of last night, and a majority of today was awful. Everything seemed to sing out her name, remind me of her, and remind me of my loss. Then, at lunch I wrote a poem:

I’m left alone in darkness black,

If only I could have her back.

My stomach twists, my heart yearns,

I long for her to just return.

Despair and sadness restrain my soul.

She broke my heart, left me un-whole.

She’s darkened the sky that once was bright,

When she was near it all came out right.

My best friend, my only, has left me to die.

But I’m stronger then that; I’ll try not to cry.

My Lord Jesus loves me more,

I’ll never see Him walk out the door.

He will always love me, He will always care.

He wants me to move on, but how can I dare?

It seems the whole world is changing, it’s true.

Friends are shifting, giving me not a clue.

I don’t know what to say; I don’t know what to do.

But I have the Lord, that much is true.

He’s all I need for true happiness.

I don’t need a friend I can hug and can kiss.

With Him, it’s perfect, life is a song.

I won’t be unhappy for very long.

His love is perfect, Holy, Divine.

With faith in Jesus, it all will be fine.

So don’t pull a Job, (hahahaha Biblical humor!) have faith in God; in the good times, and the bad.

The song is all about singer’s “grown up Christmas list.” A letter to Santa Claus saying “my lifelong wish is…” and it lists stuff like world peace, no more loneliness, etc. (Read The Lyrics Here)

Why do I dislike it? The lyricist encloses a long list of things that should happen, the problem is with the song, through the recording of the song, and its release, there was no effort put forth to ACTUALLY solve these issues.

One line in particular just drives me through the wall. “Everyone would have a friend” I’m in high school, and don’t have a lot of friends, in fact most of the people hate me because I’m an artist; so it goes without saying that this kind of thing is touchy to me. If Amy Grant (the singer who made the song famous) was at the mall and saw someone crying, what do you think she would do? I don’t know anything about Grant, so take that for what it is. But the point is, she, and most people in the world, would turn the other cheek. They would forget about it. If I was in that situation I would ask the crying person if they were alright, I would never just ignore them. Grant is singing about how everyone should have a friend, and probably would think twice about comforting strangers. PROBABLY! (Once again, don’t know her)

I’m an artist. I make films and music about hopes, dreams, and such. If you’re going to make art about something, make sure you’re actually planning to promote it. Phil Vischer once said “People don’t learn about Christians from watching Christian films, people learn about Christians from watching Christians.” I don’t think people should start making inspirational art, but rather people, especially celebrities, should stop creating art and using it to pretend they give a darn about something.

If you’re going to say “Everyone should have a friend” in a song, then be ready to be a friend darn it! If you don’t what are you? A hypocrite. Nothing short of it. So remember that in your art!

First major editing session with my new computer, I ended up having to get a new video editorial workstation because the other new one sucked… a lot…

Today I edited the Blue Bologna music video (Being Released December 16th) and A Boy & His Penguin, Episode 6 (December 19th). I also checked over and made some tweaks to The World According to Jimmy: One Baby Boy (December 12th).

The Blue Bologna music video EXPLODED in post-production. I mean literally EXPLODED! It was supposed to be a very low budget thing, and… well… it was not a low budget thing. Lots of cool edits in that one.

Then the A Boy & His Penguin video was also very expensive. Why? Because everything went wrong. I spent a long while looking for props to do ADR work (extra lines and shots shot in the post production phase) and everything went wrong.

So, all the extra budget we had for Christmas 2009 died today. But don’t worry, nothing is going to be cheap!!!!

Also– look forward to a guest appearance in the World According to Jimmy Christmas special! Can’t say who just yet, but it is confirmed!

We’ve upgraded to a brand new state-of-the-art, top of the line, industrial computer from ASUS. (Running on Windows 7)

Tomorrow, I’ll get started on Blue Squid Productions Christmas editorial again, and get back on my feet!

One last note- In buying a new desktop, we also got two new workstations! A new audio editing and video editing program! Hopefully it’ll be an upgrade, and if not then Doug will be upset and tweet about.

Unfortunatley, Mr. PC decides it is going to stop working, therefore, Blue Squid is at an extreme limit. No editing, no recording, no blogging (Typing this from the library.)

I’m going to try to get my Blue Squid Christmas stuff out there on time, and hopefully I will. Please just keep us in your prayers that everything will come out okay.

We don’t have the budget to reshoot anything for Christmas ’09, so if we lose the footage it will be bad.

I apologize, but I won’t be able to upload any new episodes of Jimmy’s Joke of The Week, but that really won’t be a change, as I never uploaded on time anyway. I’ll see what I can do, but don’t get your hopes up.

Do you see how serious this word is? It’s probably the worst of all of the “Swear words” and is, unfortunately, taken the least serious of them. (Because words describing sexual activity, excrement, or derogatory terms for women are so much worse then saying you want someone to experience endless torture forever.)

Do people say this word because they don’t know what it means, or because they honestly want someone/something to die and experience endless torture?


Maybe they don’t understand that Hell lasts forever.

FOREVER!

“Oh they’ll get used to it!” No, that’s what makes it bad. You DON’T get used to it.



So, I’m going to resolve to stop saying this word! And please, use the word Damn responsibly. Unless if you want a person/object to go to Hell forever, please don’t use it.

Godtastic! News.
My computer does not have a DVD burner.


There! I said it! It’s a hunk of junk PC. (I am a windows guy, I don’t like Apple/Mac)

So, I’ve been having some issues sending the Godtastic!:Not The Truth master copy to the DVD production house.


My brother, Andrew (Who you can see make an appearance in Where is My Tiger?, and in Godtastic!:Not The Truth) is burning the DVD for me, to send to the DVD production house.


I’m excited are you?!?!?!? (It was actually funny, some people at school said to me: “You’re still working on that?!?!?”)

On the front of Doug 3.0, I’mm sorry I haven’t been using the twitter hash tag (#doug3). I only think to tweet about it when I do bad, so if you don’t see the hash tag, that’s a good sign.

I realize that I really need to improve my temper before anything. It gets me fired up, and angry. (It’s even worse around my parents, because they have the same temper)
